When we write our FYI series of articles to assist you in diagnosis, it is to help you get to the bottom of brake problems fast. However, there are a few common-sense precautions that you must take before you start.

RULES TO FOLLOW:
1. Be sure that you stop the engine before you work under any vehicle. This also means to insure that no one else can operate the vehicle while you are working on it. It is important that you lock out any systems that may endanger you in any way during your work or inspections on or around the vehicle.
2. Always chock the wheels of the vehicle you are working on or inspecting. Depleting the air system pressure may cause the vehicle to roll. Another thing to remember when working under a system that may be depleting the air is to keep your hands away from actuators, pushrods, and slack adjusters as they may apply as the system pressure drops.
3. Never connect or disconnect a hose or line that contains air pressure. It may whip as air escapes. Never remove any component or pipe plug unless you are sure that all system pressure has been depleted.
4. Never exceed the recommended air pressure for the system. Always remember to wear safety glasses and any other safety equipment required while working with air pressure. Never look directly into air jets or direct them at anyone.
5. Never try to dismantle a component of the air brake system until you have read and totally understand the recommended procedures for handling the task safely. Some units contain powerful springs, and injury or death can occur if they are not properly dismantled. Always use the correct tools, and observe all the precautions relative to the use of those tools.
